I don’t know about your dog, but my dog Storm is deathly afraid of thunder. How about yours. Well, it’s common among canines, partly because their hearing is so much more sensitive than ours that it really sounds like the earth is breaking apart. Dogs may actually shiver and shake they get so scared of thunder.
Here is a trick for you to try so you can desensitize your dog to the noise of thunder. Luckily, here in Fremont, CA we don’t get much thunder, but I have used this technique and have noticed some improvement.
Record the sound of thunder and play it back at low volume when you feed your dog or give him a treat. Make sure he is calm and it is not bothering him, otherwise turn the volume down more. You do not want to make the joyous act of eating or getting a treat something that he comes to fear. This is when your dog should be in a happy frame of mind.
Keep this up while you gradually increase the volume. In time, he will come to ignore the noise, or may even expect food or a treat when he does hear thunder. This is a much better scenario than having him shake from fear. This is not a quick fix. It may take your dog quite a while before this works for him, but stick to it.
Let me know of any other ideas you may have.
